In 1988, on completing his studies at the Moscow College of Choreography (Alexander Prokofiev's class), he joined the Bolshoi Ballet Company. In 1991, he graduated from the performers' faculty of the Institute of Choreography (today Institute and College have been amalgamated into the Moscow State Academy of Choreography). He rehearsed under Nikolai Simachyov and Marina Semyonova, Nikolai Fadeyechev. In 2008-11, he was Moscow's Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre Director of Ballet. In 2011, he became the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet Director

In 1997, he took part in the Bolshoi Theatre New Year Premieres of works by young choreographers — he and Anastasia Yatsenko danced the lead roles in Alexander Ratmansky’s ballet Capriccio to music by Igor Stravinsky. In 1998, as part of the same New Year Premieres project, he danced the part of Teacher in the Russian premiere of the The Lesson, by Danish choreographer, Fleming Flindt, to music by Georges Delarue (the part of Pupil was danced by Inna Petrova). He was one of the first dancers to perform Alexei Ratmansky’s ballet, Charms of Mannerism, to music by Richard Strauss (1997 — a Postmodern-Theatre enterprise).
In 2004, he played one of the leads in the Mayakovsky Theatre premiere of the ballet-comedy Love through the Eyes of a Detective after the play by Peter Shaffer The Private Eye (director — Sergei Artsibashev, choreographer — Vyacheslav Gordeyev).
Tours
In 1997, he appeared in Lisbon, in a Novosibirsk Theatre of Opera and Ballet production of The Sleeping Beauty. In 1999, with Nina Ananiashvili, he danced the main roles in a Paliashvili Theatre of Opera and Ballet production of Swan Lake, in Tbilisi. In 2000, he took part in the International Ballet Festival, in Tokyo: he danced the second act of Jean Schneitzhoeffer’s La Sylphide (choreography — Pierre Lacotte) with the Tokyo Ballet Company ( partner — Yukari Saito). In 2002, he appeared with English National Ballet in a new production of Swan Lake by Derek Deane at the Albert Hall, London (his partner was Svetlana Zakharova who, at the time, was still a Maryinsky Theatre soloist). In 2002-2003, he appeared in the Malakhov and Friends enterprise, in Japan and Greece. In 2003, Sergei Filin and Nina Ananiashvili danced the main roles in Viktor Ron’s production of The Sleeping Beauty with Hungarian National Ballet, Budapest. In 2003, he took part in the International Festival of Ballet, Japan. In 2005, he made his Vienna State Opera debut as Count Albrecht in Giselle (Elena Chernyshova production). His partner was Polina Semionova (Berlin State Ballet).
