This is how the 37-year old conductor explained his decision: - The tasks I have taken on at the Bolshoi Theatre at the beginning of this year are more monumental than it was possible to predict when I took up the position. T ugan Sokhiev signed a contract with the Bolshoi Theatre for the time period from February 1st 2014 till January 31st 2018. The document took into consideration the conductor's foreign engagements that did not allow him to start implementing his duties in full force from the very beginning. According to the Bolshoi Theatre General Director Vladimir Urin, the contract also has a detailed description of the activities that Tugan Sokhiev is supposed to implement in Moscow in 2014-2016. Lights of the Bolshoi The festival "Circle of Light" in the capital The best VJs of the world came to the IV International Moscow Festival "Circle of Light". The capital's mayor Sergey Sobyanin opened the festival. It was the first time in the history of this event, organized by Moscow Department for Media and Advertising, that the opening ceremony took place not on Red Square, but near Ostankino Tower, which became one of the festival venues for the first time. Sergey Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, mentioned at the opening ceremony that the festival had brought together 10 thousand foreign tourists, thousands of spectators and millions of TV viewers. /…/ This grandiose show that unites all elements - fire, water and air - starts from the journey to the east: fakirs, drummers and dancers appear on the stage, dragons sail on water and Ostankino tower shines with all colors of the kaleidoscope. Then it is the time for a French theme; architecture silhouettes of Paris and familiar portraits of the famous mime Marcel Marceau appear in the fog and splashes of the fountain and the accordion is playing. The 540-meter high Moscow Tower now looks like the most famous Paris sight, the Eifel Tower. Then the audience is taken to Las Vegas… The show closes with Russian motifs. Lighted miniatures of Moscow sights are floating on water: there is St. Basil's Cathedral, the Moscow State University and the Bolshoi Theatre. Stunning fireworks are sparkling in the night sky with thousands of lights; there also is a spectacular game of lights on Ostankino Tower. Vladimir Chernikov, the head of the Moscow Department for Media and Advertising, told "Rossiiskaya Gazeta" that each year the festival was coming to a new level and attracted more and more participants. This year 120 designers, artists and VJs from 30 countries, including Brazil, Chili, Columbia, Denmark, Switzerland and other countries, have taken part in the festival. They have demonstrated 137.5 hours of video installations. Last year there were only 24 teams from 11 countries. This year the list of the festival venues included Ostankino Tower, the Manezh Square, the Bolshoi Theatre and the museum-reserve "Tsaritsyno". All programs have been dif ferent. For example, in "Tsaritsyno" the audience has had a chance to see a laser show on the façade of the Big Palace of Catherine II. The Bolshoi Theatre's façade has become a huge screen for video mapping and unique 3D projections, just like it did in previous years. Similar installations transformed the Kuznetsky Most between the Bolshaya Dmitrovka and Petrkova. The festival closes late at night on October 14th. Starting from 7.30 p.m. the best numbers that have been presented during the festival will be demonstrated again on all venues. By the way: last year 3 million people attended the festival, but this year the organizers plan to have twice as many spectators. IV International Festival "Circle of Light" opened in Moscow on October 10th. The capital's main sights changed tremendously with the bright light installations. This year the organizers have promised to put up the greatest show in the festival's history. The Bolshoi Theatre has become one of the main venues of the festival "Circle of Light".
