The Stanislavsky Theatre, located in XIX century historical building just 750 metres (9-minute walk) from the Bolshoi, proudly presents Giordano’s Andrea Chénier under the direction of Alexander Titel and conductor Pietro Mazzetti, with scenography by Alexander Borovsky. The cast features extraordinary performers who have graced the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and trained in the same prestigious academies that have nurtured generations of Russia’s finest opera and ballet artists. Their mastery and dramatic presence bring to life the grandeur, intensity, and human drama of Giordano’s masterpiece, offering audiences a compelling, unforgettable operatic experience. Opera at the Stanislavsky Theatre is the great and affordable alternative to the Bolshoi. The poet André Chénier, a witness to and participant in the revolutionary events of late 18th-century France, is the central figure of Umberto Giordano’s opera Andrea Chénier. A young poet, inspired by the slogans of the French Revolution – Liberty, Equality, Fraternity – ultimately ascended the guillotine, like thirty thousand other French citizens who perished within a single year of revolutionary terror.
While the revolution served as a powerful engine of history, it also awakened society’s darkest and most dangerous instincts. How do people behave in the “fateful moments” of the world? What logic underlies the transformation of revolutionary ideals? Why does the revolution devour its own children? These are the questions explored by the creators of the production.
“The opera explores the place of the Artist in the revolution, the responsibility of the Artist to both present and future, and the way revolutionary struggle can, in pursuit of its ideals, sometimes invert them completely. And, as with any opera, it tells a story of love. Love and art in the chaos of revolution – this is the heart of the production,” says director Alexander Titel.
