The opera’s plot is based on two ancient Russian legends from the 13th century — The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and The Tale of Saint Princess Fevronia of Murom. It presents a vivid gallery of national characters: the ideal image of a Russian woman — faithful, loving, and capable of heroic sacrifice; the tragic figure of Grishka Kuterma — a man spiritually broken; and the brave warriors-defenders marching toward death.

In the new production, freed from a strict historical setting in medieval Russia, the opera gains greater freedom in interpreting its characters. Among Kitezh’s defenders appear men in naval coats, while the silhouettes of the Tatar enemies evoke the armor of knights… Eras and epochs merge, and space undergoes similar — and at times literal — transformations: the forest, the hermit’s cell, the city, and the church become one — a place where each person chooses their own path.

Does this path lead to the invisible city?
