The Stanislavsky Theatre, located in XIX century historical building just 750 metres (9-minute walk) from the Bolshoi, offers audiences the unique opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable evening of music and drama awaits — Cherubini’s “Medea” in Moscow. Many of the Theatre’s artists have graced the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and trained at the same prestigious academies that formed Russia’s greatest opera talents. Their presence guarantees that Medea resonates with both dramatic authenticity and musical excellence, carrying forward the legacy of one of opera’s most iconic roles. Opera at the Stanislavsky Theatre is the great and affordable alternative to the Bolshoi. Luigi Cherubini’s Medea is one of the great masterpieces of French opera at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Cherubini, a founder of the Paris Conservatoire and a composer whom Beethoven himself called the greatest of his contemporaries, witnessed and chronicled the French Revolution. In Medea, he created a work of operatic scale equal to the ancient Greek myth that inspired it. Recognized as one of the most powerful tragedies in the operatic repertoire, Medea demands not only extraordinary vocal skill but also exceptional dramatic artistry.
The opera experienced a renaissance in the mid-20th century thanks to Maria Callas, whose legendary portrayal of Medea set an enduring benchmark for the role. Ever since, sopranos approaching this part have been expected to deliver a rare combination of vocal brilliance and dramatic intensity.
It is precisely for this reason that the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre turned to Cherubini’s masterpiece. The company boasts two remarkable singers capable of embodying Medea’s grandeur and passion: the world-renowned soprano Hibla Gerzmava and one of Moscow’s brightest operatic stars, Natalia Muradymova.
The production is performed in the Italian translation by Carlo Zangarini, with recitatives by Franz Lachner, honoring the performance tradition that has kept Cherubini’s work alive on the international stage. SynopsisOnce
The Argonauts, led by Jason, set out on a perilous journey and won the Golden Fleece. They were aided by Medea, daughter of the King of Colchis, who had fallen in love with Jason. Deceiving her father, she enabled the Argonauts to steal the treasure and fled with them. To delay pursuit, Medea murdered her brother and, cutting his body into pieces, cast them into the sea.
The return journey was long and dangerous. The Argonauts struck their enemies and evaded pursuers, moving from place to place. Thus ten years passed. During their wanderings, Medea bore Jason two sons. At last, fate led them to Corinth. Jason, weary of a life full of risk and exile, resolved to marry Glauce, daughter of Creon, ruler of Corinth.
Now
Glauce is tormented by dreadful forebodings. She fears the vengeance of the scorned Medea. Jason and Creon try to calm her. Medea appears, swearing she will never allow the wedding of Jason and Glauce. Creon demands that Medea leave Corinth, but, moved by her pleas, he grants her one more day.
Medea assures Jason that she has accepted her fate, and entrusts her servant Neris to deliver a wedding gift to Glauce—an ancient jewel. When Glauce dons the diadem, she dies. Medea then kills her own sons and appoints Jason a final meeting on the sacred shores of the Styx.
