The stage of the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Academic Music Theatre will host the world premiere of the national choreographic project “My Maya”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Maya Plisetskaya — a true icon of world ballet and People’s Artist of the USSR.
The project aims not only to pay tribute to the great ballerina, but also to reflect on her artistic legacy through the language of contemporary choreography. For the first time since her passing, five leading choreographers from the country’s major theatres will create original dance miniatures — each one a unique stage response to the image and creative spirit of Plisetskaya.
The Ballet Gala will combine newly created choreographic pieces with legendary fragments from her repertoire. The project features artists from the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre, the Ural Opera Ballet, the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Rostov Musical Theatre.
Among the choreographers:
Alexander Sergeev (Mariinsky Theatre)
Maxim Sevagin (Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre)
Maxim Petrov (Ural Opera Ballet)
Alexander Omar (Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre)
Ivan Kuznetsov (Rostov Musical Theatre)
The premieres will be performed together with choreographic fragments closely associated with the name of Plisetskaya: the pas de deux from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky (choreography by Marius Petipa), scenes from Bizet–Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (choreography by Alberto Alonso), Gustav Mahler’s The Death of the Rose (choreography by Roland Petit), fragments from César Cui’s Laurencia (choreography by Vakhtang Chabukiani) and Minkus’ Don Quixote (choreography by Alexander Gorsky).
The cast includes:
Ekaterina Kondaurova – prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre, Honoured Artist of Russia
Alexander Sergeev – soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre
Daria Pavlenko – Honoured Artist of Russia
Oleg Gabyshev – Honoured Artist of Russia, leading soloist of the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre
“As Plisetskaya is gone, her dance continues to live — in the body, in the intonation, in the memory of those who step onto the stage today. Her plasticity and strength remain a benchmark for those who already dance and for those who are taking their very first steps in the studio,” says choreographer Alexander Omar.
The project is implemented by the Non-Profit Organization “Open Art” Producer Center with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
“Plisetskaya is not just a ballerina. She is a metaphor of Russian art — style, drama, strength of spirit. Through her legacy we explore the language of choreography and memory,” notes the official address of the Organizing Committee.
