In the historic heart of Moscow, within the iconic walls of the State Kremlin Palace, the Kremlin Ballet Theatre presents an evening of timeless artistry. Its dancers, many trained in the same prestigious academies as the stars of the Bolshoi Theatre, bring classical precision and expressive depth to every performance.

The ballet The Snow Maiden enchants audiences with its magical score by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and its lyrical depiction of winter, love, and the delicate balance between human desire and the forces of nature. A visual and emotional feast, this production immerses viewers in a sparkling fairy-tale world, where every gesture and step tells a story of purity, passion, and the fleeting beauty of the season.

Libretto by V. Burmeister, based on the play by A. N. Ostrovsky, “The Snow Maiden”

The character of the Snow Maiden holds a unique place in Russian culture and, in particular, in the art of choreography.

The music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for Alexander Ostrovsky’s play The Snow Maiden is a true masterpiece—one of the composer’s most inspired works—radiating light, rich colors, and a vibrant bloom of fantastical, vividly painted characters.

For Tchaikovsky, The Snow Maiden was a bridge between his early compositional experiments and his later masterpieces, including Swan Lake and Eugene Onegin. The composer himself admitted that he loved Ostrovsky’s play so deeply that he effortlessly composed the entire score in just three weeks.

On the stage of the State Kremlin Palace, Andrey Petrov’s production transforms this springtime tale into the power of an ancient pagan myth. A grand stage, dazzling costumes, monumental sets, original choreography, the perfection of classical dance, and the theatrical skill of a talented company combine to create an unforgettable and magical experience for both young and adult audiences alike.

It is a performance where folklore and artistry meet, where the purity of myth dances hand in hand with the brilliance of Russian ballet.

Synopsis

ACT ONE

SCENE ONE

In the land of the Berendeys, where the people worship Yarilo, the sun god, the Snow Maiden lives atop a magical hill. Her parents are Frost and Spring, and her companions are the snowflakes and the forest spirit Leshy. Nature itself feels the approach of Spring. Snowflakes dance in a swirling circle around the Snow Maiden and slowly melt away. Yet she feels lonely and misses her friends dearly.

SCENE TWO

A meadow near a Berendey village. From a distance, the Snow Maiden watches the people. A young couple, Kupava and Mizgir, appears. Overwhelmed by an irresistible curiosity, she longs to be near them. The Snow Maiden experiences for the first time the mysterious and unknown power of love. Mizgir captivates her imagination completely.

SCENE THREE

The Snow Maiden pleads insistently with Frost to allow her to go to the people. Her deep longing fills Frost, the winds, and Leshy with unease and apprehension. Yet Frost firmly refuses her request. Suddenly, Spring arrives, accompanied by a flock of birds. She senses that her daughter is resolute. With a mixture of worry and hope, Frost and Spring release the Snow Maiden into a new and unfamiliar life.
SCENE FOUR
The Berendey village celebrates the farewell of winter. Unexpectedly, the Snow Maiden appears, enchanting everyone with her extraordinary beauty. The villagers, Bobyl and Bobylikha, welcome her as their own daughter, and she joyfully accepts their affection.

ACT TWO

SCENE ONE

Spring has arrived in the Berendey village. Leaves unfold on the trees, and the land awakens to new life. The Snow Maiden awaits love. Many young men of the village, including the shepherd Lel, court her, yet none capture her heart. Her soul belongs entirely to one—Mizgir.

SCENE TWO

Spring wedding rituals of the Berendeys take place. Young women weave crowns from early blossoms and offer them to their chosen beloveds. Kupava presents her wreath to Mizgir. The young men pursue the girls to affirm their choice through the ceremony. The Snow Maiden appears, and Mizgir, enchanted by her beauty, abandons Kupava and follows the Snow Maiden. Kupava’s wreath falls to the ground.

SCENE THREE

Heartbroken, Kupava confides in King Berendey, revealing Mizgir’s betrayal. He has violated sacred Berendey rituals and shamed Kupava. In anger, King Berendey forbids Mizgir from attending the Sun-God Yarilo celebration.

SCENE FOUR

Night falls over the valley of Yarilo the Sun. The Berendeys await the dawn. Despite the royal decree, Mizgir arrives, followed by the Snow Maiden. She confesses her love for him openly. Neither King Berendey nor his people can resist the power of such love. The King blesses their union.

As the first rays of the sun shine upon the valley, they fall directly on the Snow Maiden. She begins to melt and vanishes before their eyes. Horrified, Mizgir, overwhelmed with grief, plunges into the lake. The Berendey people mourn the loss but still honor Yarilo, giving thanks for the coming of Spring.
