Just 750 metres from the Bolshoi Theatre, the historic Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre presents the Gala Evening and Award Ceremony of Ballet Magazine. This event is one of the most anticipated evenings of the season — a celebration where excellence in dance is not only performed, but honored.

On April 30, 2026, the XXXII Solemn Ceremony of the “Soul of Dance” Award and a gala concert of the laureates will take place on the stage of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre.

Established in 1994 by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and Ballet magazine, the “Soul of Dance” is the only national professional award presented annually for achievements in choreography. Its recipients include choreographers, teachers, composers, conductors, stage designers, and journalists.

Over the years, the prestigious prize has been awarded to such outstanding figures as Olga Lepeshinskaya, Marina Semyonova, Maya Plisetskaya, Rodion Shchedrin, Vladimir Vasiliev, and Yuri Grigorovich. The list has since been continued by leading artists of Russian choreography, including Ulyana Lopatkina, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Svetlana Zakharova, Diana Vishneva, Evgenia Obraztsova, Ivan Vasiliev, Oleg Gabyshev, and many other distinguished cultural figures.

In 2024, the 30th anniversary ceremony was held. Over the decades, the history of the “Soul of Dance” has evolved into a unique ballet encyclopedia, intertwining past and present, tradition and continuity. Alongside the traditional individual nominations—“Rising Star,” “Star,” “Teacher,” “Knight of Dance,” “Magician of Dance,” and “Press Leader”—a special category was introduced: “For Contribution to the Development of National Dance Art.” For the first time, creative organizations—ballet festivals, theatres, ensembles, and competitions—were honored alongside individual artists.

In 2025, the main nominations highlighted representatives from Russia’s national republics and regions, including Yakutia, Tatarstan, Mari El, Dagestan, Adygea, Altai, Donbas, as well as the cities of Samara, Voronezh, St. Petersburg, and Moscow.

In 2026, in addition to the traditional nominations, special attention will be given to regional ballet schools whose graduates have, over many years, supplied leading Russian theatres and companies with artists and shaped their ensembles.
