Sergei Kalagin

Conductor

Honoured Artist of Tatarstan (1985).
Prizewinner of the First All-Russian Conducting Competition (1982).

Born in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod).
In 1970, graduated from the Choral Conducting Faculty of the Gorky Conservatoire (class of Professor Samorukova). Subsequently continued his studies at the Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (Faculty of Operatic and Symphonic Conducting, classes of Professors Simeonov, Rabinovich and Dmitriev).

1975-1980 - Conductor at the Leningrad Academic Maly Theatre of Opera and Ballet.
1980-1989 - Conductor with the Kazan Symphony Orchestra (Tatarstan).
1989-1991 - Conductor at the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Company.
1991 - Became a conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre.


Conducts the operas Aida, Don Carlos, La Traviata, Otello, The Magic Flute, Le Nozze di Figaro, Faust, Lohengrin, Das Rheingold, The Queen of Spades, Mazepa, Eugene Onegin, Iolanta, Charodeika, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maid Fevronia, Sadko, Mozart e Salieri, Virineya, Zosya, Madama Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, Rita and Kolokolchik.

Has toured with the Mariinsky Opera Company in Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Portugal, Israel and Hong-Kong.
Has conducted with the greatest Russian symphony orchestras and toured many times in the USA and the Netherlands.
